When should I keep my child home from school?

School attendance is essential for accessing learning opportunities and maximizing your student's potential for success.

Making the determination of whether to send your child to school can sometimes be difficult. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises sending your child to school if he or she is well enough to learn.  This means your child's symptoms do not disrupt their ability to concentrate in class and do not distract classmates.

In general, indications to keep a child home include:

  • Fever 100.0 F or over

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Uncontrolled cough

  • Large amounts of discolored (not clear) nasal discharge

  • Recent head trauma accompanied by symptoms

  • Uncontrolled distracting pain

  • Unexplained rash

In general students may return back to school 24 hours after symptoms have resolved

Partnering with your medical home and school health professionals for supportive measures can help minimize time away from learning opportunities.
